In reality, advancing robotics technology may provide job security for high-skilled workers. When low-skilled workers who cannot manage software programs are paired with technology, productivity decreases. However, when the right software and robotic companions are paired with high-skilled workers who know how to operate and use technology, productivity and efficiency increases.
Business owners and hiring managers sometimes complain that they “cannot find workers with sufficient skills.” What they often really mean to say is that they cannot find low-wage workers with acceptable skills. A paradigmatic change will need to take place in order for companies to survive well through technology’s evolution. Gone are the days where outsourcing is the cheapest way to increase profits. Increased process automation means that it makes even less sense to outsource low-wage work to other countries for reduced labor costs.
Companies will need higher-skilled professionals to understand and efficiently use software programs and other advanced technology applications. For example, an electronics manufacturer known for making the iPhone has recently announced that it will be spending $40 million on advanced robotics and other factory improvements. Technology and support developments at their new facility in Pennsylvania include plans for the creation of 500 new jobs. Amazon is another company that uses over 1,000 new robots in its warehouse centers; this company continues to grow and has added 20,000 employees within the last year alone.
Robotic automation does not equate to overall job loss. Combining skilled workers with efficient robots and other technology application programs brings out the best of technology while improving people’s standard of living. Technology advancement continues to provide a reliable path toward improved efficiency and increased productivity. Keep on learning—and may all of our jobs be enhanced by robotic programs.
