Our changing world provides society with a kaleidoscope of demands. In some ways, this is very good for business. All of the buzzwords are there: war on terrorism, reconstruction efforts, security threats, global interdependence, aging population, medical epidemics, economic crises, environmental issues, etc. In a successful economic system, long-range financial outlooks determine what can be done.
Ethics are named and considered, but are best practices in this area really followed? In this arena, policymakers become the judge and jury for what societies can afford. Public awareness is crucial if we are to retain self-determination and reasonable independence. Technological developments provide opportunities to enhance systems, efficiency, and even lives. Open-sourcing of research has been one way to keep what seems “mysterious” in the open eyes of the public; however, people need to read about the research in order to know what is developing.
We have access to multiple news sources with just a few clicks in today’s age of massive technology. Entertainment in the same medium serves to distract us, if becoming well-educated is a goal toward raising one’s quality of life. Perceptions of quality are difficult to measure while accountability agencies are ready to fill related voids made by available funding. If we want ethics to be followed, then we may need to consider the importance of raising our awareness and keeping an open conversation around the topic of emerging technologies.
